Roll Call of
the States
Washington Week Online offered new challenges, opportunities and innovations. Prior to the program, delegates were asked to collaborate and use their imaginations (and cell phones) to record facts and images from their home state, including their state motto, important aspects of state history, an iconic state product or food or a fun cultural detail to give a snapshot of the place they call home. This student-driven production became the first USSYP Roll Call of the States to provide a unifying kick-off to the program on Welcome Night, introducing the delegates and uniting the group through the breadth, beauty and diversity of America.

National Anthem
From Fort McHenry
Washington Week is replete with ceremonial performances by military musical ensembles and the Joint Armed Forces Color Guard to open and close the program, imparting a deep sense of history and patriotism. The 2021 online format allowed for a showcase of different venues. Here, the U.S. Army Field Band performs the Star Spangled Banner at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, for Defenders Day. Defenders Day commemorates the defense of Baltimore from September 12 through September 14 during the War of 1812. The events inspired Francis Scott Key to write the now famous words of the Star Spangled Banner which became our national anthem in 1931. Enjoy this beautiful rendition performed “O’er the ramparts.”

One of the most enriching historical sites in the nation is George Washington’s Mount Vernon – the estate, museum and educational center restored and built upon the first president’s original homestead on the Potomac River, just outside the nation’s capital. The USSYP delegates take a private docented tour of the mansion and grounds each year, which includes a student wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of George and Martha Washington and the memorial to the enslaved people who lived and worked on their estate. Join the virtual tour taken by the 2021 delegates, and to learn more about the history of Mount Vernon and its restoration through the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association and Phoebe Apperson Hearst, click here.
The Soundtrack of the American Story
The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps revive the music and pageantry of General George Washington’s Continental Army at special ceremonies and events, including each year at the opening dinner of Washington Week. In support of the president, the Corps performs at all armed-forces arrival ceremonies for visiting dignitaries and heads of state at the White House and has participated in every Presidential Inaugural Parade since President John F. Kennedy’s in 1961. They paid tribute to the 2021 USSYP delegates, who were revolutionaries in their own right as the first students to participate in the program online, by giving a special performance as the sun rose at Mount Vernon.
Airmen of Note Armed Forces Medley
The Airmen of Note is the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force. Stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., it is one of six musical ensembles that form the U.S. Air Force Band. Created in 1950 to continue the tradition of Major Glenn Miller’s Army Air Forces dance band, the current band consists of 18 active-duty musicians. Here, the Airmen of Note uphold a cherished tradition of showcasing the Armed Forces Medley as part of Washington Week, shown in tribute to the officers of the 2021 USSYP Military Mentor Team.
